So I have some crazy friends in my ward that are talking me in to running a half-marathon with them in April - crazy, I know! I never thought I would EVER want to, but the idea of running/walking that far seems like something I want to say that I've done. So for the last 3 and half weeks I have been exercising everyday and next week I will start officially training for it. Getting ready for it, I have been running on the treadmill and doing some strength training. I'm supposed to go with my friends on Saturday for a longer run, but yesterday while running I developed a blister on the side of my heal:
For as long as I can remember I've worn holes into my shoes like this:
As you can see, the shoes aren't that worn out, but the inside is almost down to the plastic. I've even been to a special "running" store and they looked at me like I was an alien and said they'd never seen it before... thanks a million!
If I have any hope in completing my goal, I need help! Does anyone have any ideas!?

At the hospital here where I live, if you go to their therapy department, they have a bunch of specialists who will analyze how you walk and where you put pressure, and they can recommend shows accordingly. For example, if you put more wait on the inside of your toes or something, they'd tell you to get a basketball shoe because they have more padding there. I made that up, but it's seriously very cool. Maybe you could hunt down a physical/occupational therapist down there and they can analyze you.
I have no ideas for you on the blister/shoe problem, but I have to say - way to go on your goal! That is so cool!
I've been running for a million years and what you do is put vasoline or chapstick on your heels before you get ready to go...A blister like thing is still likely to form but it won't really hurt while your running. Good luck! Where is the half-marathon out of curosity? Also don't take ibprofen (spelling) before running the full distance. Running far loosens up your bowels and ibprofen is a diuretic and will make it that much worse. In full marathons people have been known to just "have stuff come out"--not cool at all.
check with a running store that takes video of you actually running. ask them about pronation. you may be over pronate (google pronation. there are inserts to put in shoes to correct this and there are also certain shoe brands that are meant for over pronation
Hmmm... I dunno about the shoe thing, but yay for half marathons! I'm doing it too! That is so crazy you wear out your shoes like that, the running store had no advice?
Hey Erin! Try mole skin (sp?). It is like a bandage but thicker. I think you can just get it at the grocery store, or maybe at a running store. Put the vasoline on around your blister and then the mole skin over top. Cut it much bigger than your blister or he whole in your shoe, so it rubs the mole skin and not your foot. I think I may even have some you can borrow and try it out. Put it on your heels even if you DON'T have a blister already to prevent it. WAY TO GO!!!
BTW- we need to have a play dates soon! :)
The moleskin works great to protect the blister, but be sure to cut a hole out for where the blister is so it's actually a donut around the blister. also, when the blister is gone, you can start wearing 2 pair of socks to prevent more blisters. this allows the friction to go between the socks and not the sock and your foot. however, i would seriously consider finding a physical therapist who could analyze how you run and where you're putting pressure - that's a serious hole in your shoe that takes some serious analysis. or your could try a podiatrist - they specialize in that sort of thing. it's great that you're doing a half marathon. good luck!!
